I love sweet potatoes and this recipe for Caribbean-Spiced Roasted Sweet Potatoes has a kick of flavour I love. Sweet potatoes available in most supermarkets outside of Jamaica are different than the starchier Caribbean sweet potatoes that have a red skin and are powdery-dry when roasted. They are also perfect in Jamaican soup recipes because they don’t break down easily. The common orange sweet potato used in this recipe are great for roasting, too! Perfectly spiced with a spicy kick you can pair them with your favourite Jamaican fish or meat dish. Not only are they easy to prep they are cook quickly in the oven. Also remember that sweet potatoes are full of nutrients that make them a healthier option compared to the average potato. Enjoy!
Sweet Potato or Yam? In the U.S. retailers commonly differentiate between two kinds of sweet potatoes (soft and firm) by calling one a yam, even though it’s a potato. Yes, it’s very confusing. But remember this, yams have a bark-like skin and are shaped differently than a potato. They are not easy to find unless you shop at specialty food shops, Caribbean and African markets.
Caribbean-Spiced Sweet Potatoes Recipe
3 lbs (1.3 kg) Sweet Potatoes, peeled
3 Tbsp (45 mL) Coconut Oil or Vegetable Oil
1 tsp (5 mL) Cinnamon
1 tsp (5 mL) Ground Ginger
1/2 (2 mL) tsp Salt
2 tsp (10 mL) West Indian Hot Pepper Sauce or 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper
Preheat oven to 400°F
1. Cut potatoes into 1-inch chunks
2. In large bowl, with clean hands massage coconut oil into potatoes
3. Massage cinnamon, ginger and salt into the potatoes and then hot sauce. Make sure to wash you hands immediately after
4. Place potatoes on non-stick baking sheet and place in oven
5. After 30 minutes, with a spatula turn over potatoes and, if needed, bake for another 10 minutes or until tender
